Dressage shows feature a variety of classes based on rider experience, horse training level, and special divisions. Here’s an overview:
Introductory & Training Levels
- Intro Tests (A, B, C): Walk and trot with minimal canter in Intro Test C — perfect for beginners.
- Training Level: Adds more canter work and basic figures.
National Levels
- First Level: Introduces lengthened trot and canter.
- Second Level: Includes collection, simple changes, and lateral work.
- Third Level: Adds flying changes and advanced lateral movements.
- Fourth Level: Prepares for FEI tests with collected and extended gaits.
FEI Levels (International)
- Prix St. Georges, Intermediate I & II, Grand Prix: The highest levels, featuring piaffe, passage, flying changes and canter pirouettes.
Special Classes
- Freestyle: Perform to music with required movements.
- Young Horse: For horses aged 4–6, judged on potential and development.
- Equitation: Focus on rider position and effectiveness.

To enter a dressage show, follow these steps:

- Schooling Shows: Local and beginner-friendly.
- Recognized Shows: Licensed by RMDS/USEF/USDF with stricter rules.

Complete Memberships & Documentation
Requirements are different for different shows. Be sure you read the Prize List for requirements.They can include:

- Rider: Active RMDS, USEF and/or USDF membership.
- Horse: RMDS, and/or USEF Horse ID and/or USDF registration.
- SafeSport training (for riders over 18).
- Health paperwork: Coggins test, vaccination proof, and travel certificate if required.
- Check the Prize List
- Review stabling, schedules, refund policies, and any special requirements.

- You can download the entry form or sometimes enter online.
- Upload documents and pay fees before the deadline.

No, your horse does not need to stay the night at a show. If you travel any distance for the show, you may be able to stable your horse at the show grounds overnight. Check the prize list for options.
